Latest developments: the lamp failed after a few months. Not wanting to get a new one I ordered a different MR11 system from Trailtech Products, a hideously expensive solution (156 euro's!) but worth it as I now can dodge potholes and I'm also actually seen. The controller is not as sophisticated as the old one, but it does its job well. The batteries were extracted from a junked laptop powerpack and consist of a total of six cells giving an open source voltage of 12.6 V. They are charged from a current limited voltage source (Imax = 0.5 A) and give a total running time of about two hours. Light output seems about the same.
