First Terabyte Fileserver

My first attempt at building a fileserver ended up way below a terabyte. Now given away to a hapless soul it consisted of a Duron-based mobo, four Maxtor 200 GB disks and an LSI MegaRAID four-port RAID controller. The OS was Fedora Core 2, which was very much en vogue back in 2005.

The capacity was later upgraded to a whopping 2.2 TB by replacing the Maxtors by 750 gig Seagates. The main problem with the server was that write speed was glacial due to the PCI-X interface card being slotted into a PCI slot. The Duron simply couldn't cope with the load imposed by the RAID adapter. Reading would max out the 100 Mbit ethernet interface.

The hardware was built into a 4U server case with metric thread all around. Very confusing if you're expecting UNC (or whatever is used in the computer industry).
